Prologue
"J-John! NO!"
Andrew sat on his knees, sobbing as the only friend he had ever had lied dying in his arms. John Reynolds, Andrew's best and only friend, met his ultimate end from Andrew's accidental friendly fire. The gunfight they were in with the Combine was brutal; bodies from either force lied everywhere. The city street was soaked in blood, yet Andrew didn't seem to notice. His vision began to blur as the tears dripped from his eyes, and he tried to save his friend. Andrew pulled the bolt out of John's back, not knowing that this would make him bleed out faster, and even if John did survive he would be paralyzed. The kid sat, applying medkit after medkit to his friend's back, until the medics would no longer give them. The battle was won.... but at what cost?
Andrew Roberts is a mystery. He managed to live completely through the Combine's occupation of earth as a child. Some kind rebels said they found him abandoned in the outlands as a baby, and raised him as their own. Andrew's adopting parents died when he was 17 years old, about 5 years before the Combine abandoned the world. They were torn apart by Hunters in front of him. From that point on, he cared for himself. He fought with a handmade crossbow that fired superheated railroad ties, the weapon of his doing and undoing. When he was 19 he met John Reynolds. John was a kind man; he reminded Andrew of his adopted father. Andrew loved John like a brother, and John cared for Andrew until his untimely death. Andrew blindly fired his crossbow and hit John in his spine, just below his chest. It killed him. The only person Andrew had ever loved: dead by his own hand. Andrew soon formed himself into a cold marauder, racking up an impressive list of murders even before the Combine's abandonment of Earth. Andrew has on thing on mind; Peace. That is all he had ever wanted. That is what he fights for. He started a group known as The Zen Initiative with the intention of stopping all human vs. human fighting, and rebuilding the populace. At any means necessary.
